Wet Canvas 2 - 'The Right Moment'
and 'The Shooter'
The two western paintings below
are drying. They are a
continuation of the previous
week’s approach of drama through
background manipulation ‘The
Right Moment’ is another effort.
It is big bold and powerful and
will look great in the right
house with the right light-even
though I might like to keep it
myself!

It works better this time I feel
with two cowboys and the dipping
steer. The action is complete in
as much as there is tidy
storyline with a single connect
of ‘catch me if you can’. I
gathered this from one of the
many rodeos I happen across in
my wanderings.
I always have my camera nearby
whenever I wander-in fact
whenever I leave the front door!
Paintings come when they want to
–not always when you want
them-so we must be prepared.
Even if you carry a small
digital at least you are armed
to respond to whatever it is
that may attract your attention.
When I was returning with my
friends from a DVD shoot
recently I noticed out the
window of the car I was driving
a grassy bank dappled shade and
light. It was a dead set
painting. I pulled over and
asked my mates wife and children
if they wouldn’t mind sitting on
the bank for a moment with a
storybook. They naturally
complied, as friends do, so then
and there I gathered a new image
and a possible painting for the
future.

Future painting maybe…but I had my camera ready! |
‘Aim’ is of an Aussie mate of
mine Len Judd. An absolutely top
bloke and known to the bull
wrestlers of Roma in Queensland,
Australia. Len has more cuts and
bruises than any guy I have ever
met from his multiple tangles
with stock over his 50 odd years
in the saddle. Here I focused on
the rifle and his gaunt in the
saddle by driving contrast into
this area of composure. Viewer
interest is on Len’s head and
rifle with the horse drifting
away into a shadowy base.

This will frame up nicely and
will look a real treat in the
Gallery. And its with the same
palette as the others above!
The latest wet painting is this
one which depicts Max from
Montana aboard his favorite
‘little paint horse’ doing a bit
of wheeling and dealing with a
renegade steer. Always wanted to
have a crack at this little
scene.

I’m just finishing up this
painting with my signature. Got
into it in the final hours of
yesterday with a glass of merlot
as a boost and a bit of fun
conversation with Barry who is
working with me on the TV show
and instructional DVD’s. Anyhow,
it came off the brush without
any problem. There’s still some
work to do on it but it is 98%
there. This drama push I’m into
at the moment is great for these
action paintings. But I need a
break at the moment and thinking
about a trip to Mexico for a
spot of fishing.
